ESCHER FOREVER!, is an exposition of the most famous Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher (1898 – 1972). The two major themes for this exhibition are eternity and infinity, and is the fist to display the link between the artist’s earlier and later prints.

Escher was a draftsman, a book illustrator, a muralist, but mainly a printmaker. He deeply exported mathematical ideas in his art, like paradoxes, the tessellations and the impossible figures, where he ‘played’ with the opposites: high and low, close by and far away, up and down.

The Eternity period is strongly seen at Escher’s Italian period, from 1924 to 1935, the main subject of his works wore the landscapes of southern Italy, many of which he drawn of dizzying angles. In the late 30’ Escher develops the tessellation, i.e. the regular division of a plane. In 1937 he uses this concept to make the renowned Metamorphosis. “Filling the plane has become a real mania to which I have become addicted and from which I sometimes find hard to tear myself away”, he stated, at the age of 68. In fact the tessellation occupied a great part of Escher’s life.

The Infinity period came after around 1956, when Escher was looking for a technique to express infinity within the limits of the print. He was influenced by an mathematician’s article which illustrated a system where the scale of a plane-filling was reduce proportionally by its distance from the center of the circle.

Around 1959 Escher’s work was very close to mathematics and he was inspired by another article he produces the famous Ascending and Descending, which is based on the endless stairway described in the text. ESCHER FOREVER!, é uma exposição do mais famoso artista gráfico holandês M.C. Escher (1898 – 1972). Os dois grandes temas para esta exposição são a Eternidade e o Infinito, e mostra a ligação entre o inicio e o fim da carreira do artista. Escher foi um desenhista, ilustrador de livros, um muralista, mas principalmente um printmaker. Ele explorou profundamente as idéias matemáticas em sua arte, com paradoxos, tesselations e as figuras impossíveis, onde “brincou” com os opostos: alto e baixo, perto e longe, para cima e para baixo.

O tema da Eternidade é fortemente visto no período italiano de Escher, 1924-1935 Nos seus trabalhos retratou principalmente as paisagens do sul da Itália, e em muitos dos quais elaborados através de ângulos vertiginosos. Nos anos 30 Escher desenvolve a tesselations, mosaicos, ou seja, a divisão regular do plano. Em 1937, ele usa este conceito para que ele fazer a obra Metamorphosis. “Encher o plano tornou-se uma mania real, eu me tornei viciado e às vezes acho difícil me afastar”, afirmou, na idade de 68. De fato, as tesselations ocuparam grande parte da vida de Escher.

 O período Infinito veio depois, cerca de 1956, quando Escher estava procurando uma técnica para expressar o infinito dentro dos limites da impressão. Ele foi influenciado por um artigo matemático que ilustrava um sistema onde a escala de um plano reduzia proporcionalmente pela sua distância do centro do círculo.

Por volta de 1959 os trabalhos de Escher estava muito próximo da matemática, e ele foi inspirado em outro artigo. Foi então que produziu a famosa obra Ascendente e Descendente, que se baseia na escada infinita descrita no texto que lera.
