Same Old Chic Thoughts

The Brazilian magazine Moda interviewed the psychoanalyst Flávio Gikovate about our behavior towards consumption, vanity and of course, fashion. A Brazilian blog that I really love, for its sense of reality and prudence, Oficina de Estilo, posted part of this interview. I would love to share it all in English, but I won’t (#Isuck@timemanagent). Nonotheless I would like to share some interesting thoughts.
When asked about symbols Dr. Gikovate clarified that “the society has no interest in people being happier because they consume less, that is, capitalism thrives on human misery” and according to him “happy people spend their time on things they really like, instead of buying“. I think we can all agree to that. Society imposes certain consumption attitudes, and I must say the ones who are unhappy (as consequence of this vicious circle) suffer the most, seeking happiness in consumption, trying to achieve the ideal of beauty, thinness and wealth.
Dr. Gikovate also goes to a concept defined by the Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, the Liquid Modernity – you are proud of what you consume, but not what you produce – to explain that in our society well-being, health and happiness have no meaning. Digging a pinch deeper on this concept I found myself suffering from another diagnoses of this same concept. “In liquid modernity there is no commitment to the idea of permanence and durability. Between the possibility of detachment fluid as a way of life and the imposition of the same for the vast majority, there is a vacuum between freedom and uncertainty, helplessness and social emancipation and individual”, excerpt from this article.

This pass weekend at the facilities of RAM Studios, at Fabrica del Vapore in Milan, took place one edition of Cream, a creative market/slash/drinks dedicated to young artists and designers. Among many interesting exhibitors my favorite was Bolo Paper, with all kinds of cool zines, and Aduo, a duo from Italy and Sweden that produces T-shirts with interesting prints and super nice cotton fabrics.
